In a bid to improve children’s access to education, the Davao City Liga ng mga Barangay turned over five school-service vehicles to five elementary schools.
The school service vehicles will serve as a free transportation mode for elementary school students who live far from their schools. It aims to ensure better transportation access as well as the safety of the children.
On February 5, elementary schools in Barangays Tapak, Marilog, and Magtuod each received a school service.
Elementary schools in Barangay Manuel Guianga and Barangay Malabog each received a school service on February 6.
Julius Villafuerte, Officer-in-Charge of the Barangay Cultural Community Affairs Office, said the project was first initiated by Councilor January Duterte in Barangay Catalunan Grande during her tenure as Barangay Captain.
The project was then replicated by the Liga ng mga Barangay during her term as the office’s president.
Jhanicris Villamor, Chief of Staff of the Liga ng mga Barangay, said in an interview with the City Information Office that the funding for the project was sourced from the proceeds and profit of the Liga Congress on September 13 in Manila.
“All the profit na na-generate doon binili natin ng sasakyan kasi ang instruction ni Ma’am, all the profit or ano mang proceeds ang makuha from that is ibalik natin sa barangay (We used all the profit that we generated to purchase vehicles as instructed by Ma’am January. She said that all the profit or proceeds that we generate from that should be given back to the barangays),” she said.
The Liga assessed the 182 barangays in the city, and identified the five barangays as those that mostly needed the vehicles.
Villamor added that the vehicles are strictly for the use of the students with the purpose of transporting them to and from the school. CIO
