The Davao City Engineer’s Office (CEO) said that it is now in the process of revising the design of the Malamba bridge to make it more safe.

“Gi-strengthen namo ang design, karong January basin masugdan napud to nila’g padayon to (We have strengthened the design, maybe this month, they can already start the construction),” CEO head Engr. Joseph Dominic Felizarta said in an interview with the City Information Office on Thursday.

He said that they asked the structural engineers who made the design to add two separate columns and add a “golden-gate-like design” and they are now estimating the cost for the additional feature.

Felizarta said that the bridge contractor was cleared by the Department of Labor and Employment and was allowed to undertake the project after its personnel undergone seminars.

He said that to ensure the safe construction of bridges, they are now imposing an additional requirement on contractors.

“Ginapangayuan namo sila’g methodology kung unsaon nila pag construct para mabantayan namo (We now ask for methodology on how they will implement the construction so that we can check on it),” he said.

The collapse of the previous bridge in August 2023 was attributed to lapses in the methodology used in its construction. CIO
