The Davao City student athletes bagged numerous medals during the recently concluded Palarong Pambansa 2024 in Cebu.
Department of Education (DepEd) Davao Schools Division Superintendent (SDS) Reynante Solitario, in an interview with the City Information Office (CIO), said the Davao Region was able to achieve 4th place in the Palarong Pambansa.
Davao Region won 32 gold, 25 silver, and 35 bronze medals during the competition.
Solitario said 50 percent of these gold medals were won by athletes from the city.
Paolo Miguel Labanon, a Dabawenyo swimmer, won four gold medals which greatly helped boost the standing of the city.
“Nakuha gyud nato ang 4th place with 32 golds all in all, and we contributed 50 percent of that total golds. We have 16 golds for Davao City, 13 silver medals, and 16 bronze medals (We were able to place 4th with 32 golds, and the Davao City Division contributed 50 percent of the total number of golds. We have 16 gold medals for Davao City, 13 silver, and 16 bronze),” Solitario said.
He added that Lebanon also set a new record in the 800 meter freestyle breaking the record of NCRAA athlete in 2015.
Other sports where the city bagged gold medals include Taekwondo, Futsal, Volleyball boys (elementary), Wushu girls, Arnis, and 1500 m run.
Following this significant feat, Solitario said the DepEd Davao City Division, in partnership with the City Government of Davao through the City Sports Development Division, is eyeing the hiring of coaches and trainers to further improve the training of Dabawenyo athletes.
Meanwhile, Solitario expressed his gratitude to the city government and to the city mayor for his endless support for the Dabawenyo athletes. CIO
