Senior citizens are set to take part in the socio-cultural events lined up by the city government, through the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), in celebration of the Elderly Filipino Week.

The weeklong celebration of Elderly Filipino Week officially kicked off yesterday, October 1, at the SM City Davao where elders participated in its opening program activities such as the Walk for Life and Zumba dance.

Elderly Filipino Week is observed every first week of October to highlight the contributions of the elderly to the country’s growth as mandated by Proclamation No. 470 issued on September 26, 1994 by then President Fidel V. Ramos.

Marimar Abayata, focal person of the CSWDO’s senior citizens welfare program, said the activities will cater to the socio-cultural needs of the senior citizens and will allow them to interact with one another.

She said groups in the districts started their Filipino Elder Week in September in preparation for the main competition on October 4.

The champions from the districts will be the representatives in the Chorale, Tango, Kuratsa, and Folk Dance competitions.

The competition will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Almendras Gymnasium.
