Davao City once again successfully hosted IRONMAN 70.3 over the weekend with more than 3,000 participating athletes for its three main events including the Gwapa Dabawenya Fun Run, IRONKIDS run and duathlon, and the much anticipated IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon.
This year’s IRONMAN 70.3 followed a new race course that featured the Davao City coastal road for its 1.9-kilometer swim, and the 21.1-kilometer run, and in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur for the 90-kilometer bike race.
The Gwapa Dabawenya Fun Run took place on August 9 while the Ironkids Duathlon and Ironkids Run happened on August 10. The IRONMAN 70.3 was held August 11.
Lyndon Ancajas, acting Division Head of Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) Admin and Training Division, said the Incident Command Post for the IRONMAN 70.3 has not recorded any major incident.
Ancajas, in an interview with the City Information Office, said majority of the cases and reports they received were of minor incidents of cramps due to the heat.
He added that throughout the events, personnel from the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC), Davao City Central 911, and the Bureau of Fire Protection were stationed along the race course.
The Public Safety and Security Office (PSSO) Head Angel Sumagaysay, also said in an interview that the event was generally peaceful with zero record of incidents involving athletes in the swim, bike, run events in the triathlon.
Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte expressed his gratitude to both local and international athletes who participated in the IRONMAN as well as to the event organizers, the security cluster, Davao City government offices, and Dabawenyos who supported the event.
“Daghang salamat sa tanang ni participate sa IRONMAN events. Salamat sa mga organizers, sa security cluster, sa mga opisina sa LGU ug sa tanang Dabawenyo na nisuporta. Wala ta’y major incident o casualty (Thank you so much to everyone who participated in the IRONMAN events. Thank you to the organizers, security cluster, local government offices, and to all Dabawenyos for their support. There were no major incidents or casualties),” Mayor Duterte said in a social media post.
In the same post, Mayor Duterte also urged the public to continue giving importance to their health through a healthy and active lifestyle. CIO
