The Davao City Agriculturist’s Office (CAgrO), in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, on Tuesday kicked off the Farmers’ and Fisherfolk’s Month celebration with a forum and display exhibition of farmers products at the Rizal Park.

CAgrO Head Egardo Haspe, in an interview with the City Information Office, said the month-long celebration is aimed at recognizing the hard work of farmers and fisherfolk to keep the city fed.

“Mao na atong gihimo para ma-recognize gyud sila og ilang role of being the ones who produce our food para ma-feed atong city (This is how we recognize their role as producers who feed our city),” Haspe said.

After the opening ceremony, the display exhibition of durian, cacao, and aquaculture products was opened to the public.

The CAgrO has lined up other activities for the month-long celebration, including the turnover of fish cages in Paquibato District.

The Office will also be distributing 60,000 tilapia fingerlings and 50,000 hito fingerlings to qualified inland fisherfolk.

Around 550 bags of corn seeds and 580 bags of fertilizer will be distributed to corn farmers in the city, while 2,500 cacao seedlings will be distributed to landslide affected farmers and farmers’ association in Paquibato.

A series of trainings and seminars on organizational building and strengthening, durian production, coffee production, fishery laws, rice technologies, cacao bean grading, and other agricultural technologies is also scheduled in various agricultural locations across the city.

The celebration will culminate on May 29 and 30 at the Rizal covered court with the Farmers’ and Firsherfolk’s Agritrade Fair.
