To encourage the youth to get involved in farming and agriculture, the City Agriculturist Office (CAgrO) recently conducted a three-day youth camp at the Wangan National High School in Calinan District.
With the theme “4-H a seed of change: empowering youth to explore positive change in the community through agri-fishery involvement,” over 255 youths from barangays in Calinan District, including Wangan, Tamayong, Biao Joaquin, Talomo River, Lamanan, Dominga, and Inayangan, participated in the camp held on November 15-17.
Pablita Almador, the City Agriculturist Office’s (CAgrO) focal person for rice production, said the 4H Club is an organization that assists the youth develop practical skills, participate in agriculture-related projects, and indulge them in farming.
“Isa sa mga [goal] nato sa 4H kanang gi-engage nato sila into farming (One of the goals of 4H is to engage them into farming),” she said.
During the camp, a series of activities and talks were held including discussions on poultry production, City Social Welfare and Development programs, DSWD initiatives, and other community service activities.
The camp also featured a series of contests, including the Mr. & Ms. 4-H, basketball league, volleyball league, quiz bee, trashformation, songwriting, and singing competition, Agritale video-making contest, and cookery challenge.
Almador, however, said even before the camp, some members of the 4H were sent to Japan.
“Naa ta’y daghan ka mga youths sa una pa, nga nakaabot na gani sa Japan, kato’ng active nato nga 4H members (We have many youths, who have even reached Japan, those are our active 4H members),” she said.
She said the Agricultural Training Institute, a division of the national government, selects young people each year and sends them to Japan to study their technology so they can impart their knowledge to their fellow Filipino youths. CIO
