The City Government of Davao officially opened the 88th Araw ng Dabaw celebration at Rizal Park on Saturday night.
The monthlong celebration will highlight the city’s unity, history, and rich culture.
A Misa Pasasalamat at the San Pedro Cathedral served as the inaugural ceremony, followed by the Pasiugdang Pagsaulog at the Rizal Park.
Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, in his message delivered by Councilor Alberto Ungab, stressed that the Araw ng Dabaw festival is a manifestation of the Dabawenyos’ strength, shaped by unity, determination, resilience, and empathy for one another.
He said the celebration not only aims to celebrate the city’s rich history but also honor the individuals who have molded Davao into what it is today.
“This year’s Araw ng Dabaw celebration with the theme “88 years strong, One Davao,” reflects the strength of Dabawenyos shaped by our unity resilience, determination, and compassion for our fellowmen and women,” he added.
Duterte also expressed his gratitude to the Dabawenyos for their contributions to the city’s development, saying that without the diligence and commitment of all law-abiding, responsible, and peaceful Dabawenyos, the city could not develop.
He also invited everyone to participate in all of the events the city government has planned.
“Let us celebrate with pride and enthusiasm while holding the culture of security and discipline that define us Dabawenyos,” he said
“Let us ensure a safe and meaningful celebration for all together as one, united Dabawenyo community,” he added.
Councilor Al Ryan Alejandre, chairperson of the Committee on Tourism and Beautification, said the month-long celebration is evidence of the Dabawenyo spirit’s steadfastness, which binds the community together and inspires people to create a more resilient and prosperous Davao.
He said that Dabawenyos are known for overcoming obstacles and constantly aiming for higher goals, much like the city’s emblem, the eagle, adding that Dabawenyos would remain resilient and continue to advance as one despite adversities.
“Our unity is our greatest strength and this celebration affirms our ability to recover, rebuild, and thrive as one community,” he said.
World-class local performers who have won in national and international competitions performed at the opening ceremony. Jona Marie Soquite, Ralph Angelo Merced, Studio 51, D’squared Cru, and the University of Mindanao Chorale were among the performers.
The Top 20 contenders for Mutya ng Dabaw 2025 were presented, while the official song for this year’s celebration was launched during the opening ceremony. CIO
