In a bid to improve children’s access to education, the Davao City Liga ng mga Barangay turned over five school-service vehicles to five barangays.

The school service vehicles will serve as a free transportation mode for indigent elementary school students in the barangay who live far from their schools. It aims to ensure better transportation access as well as the safety of the children.

Councilor January N. Duterte, Liga ng mga Barangay President, said in a statement that the free transportation program for the indigent students was “developed to address the financial challenges faced by many families who struggle to cover the daily transportation costs for their children.”

The “Libreng Sakay Para sa Edukasyon” is Duterte’s flagship program that was launched in 2018 during her tenure as Punong Barangay of Brgy. Catalunan Grande from 2013 to present.

Under her leadership, five barangays were selected to benefit from the initiative.

On February 5, Barangays Tapak, Malabog, and Magtuod each received a school service.

Barangays Manuel Guianga and Marilog each received a school service on February 6.

“Ang programa nagtinguha nga mapamenos ang absenteeism nga tungod sa mga kalisud pinansyal, aron matabangan ang mga bata nga mag-apil sa klase sa regular ug magpokus sa ilang mga pagtuon (The program aims to reduce absenteeism caused by financial challenges, enabling children to attend school regularly and focus on their studies),” January Duterte emphasized.

“This initiative reinforces the critical role of education as the foundation for a brighter future. By eliminating one of the key barriers to success, it empowers the youth and helps them thrive academically,” she added.

She also pointed out that the program alleviates the financial strain on parents, allowing them to invest in their children’s education and fostering growth and resilience in the community.

The Punong Barangays that received the vehicles are reminded that the school service vehicles are strictly for the use of the students with the purpose of transporting them to and from the school. CIO
