In observation of Zero Waste Month every January, the City Environment and Natural Resources Office spearheaded a clean-up drive to be participated by barangay functionaries and households from January 6, 2023 until the end of the month.
CENRO Head Engr. Marivic Reyes said in an interview with the City Information Office on Friday that as of January 6, a total of 35 barangays in the city from Poblacion, Talomo, Agdao, Buhangin, and Bunawan are scheduled to have their respective clean-up drive. The remaining barangays will conduct the clean-up drive according to the schedule set before the month ends.
The participants of the clean-up are barangay officials and functionaries, households, establishments, government and non-government organizations, people’s organizations, and institutions.
According to Reyes, Presidential Proclamation No. 760, series of 2014, declared January as “Zero Waste Month”. It was signed by President Benigno S. Aquino III on May 5, 2014 to promote advocacy of Republic Act 9003, also known as the “Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000,”
“Zero Waste Month focuses on raising awareness about the environmental impact of waste generation and encouraging individuals and communities to reduce, re-use, and recycle to minimize their waste footprint,” Reyes said, adding that the celebration is significant as it promotes environmental awareness, encourages sustainable practices, and community engagement.
