The Davao City Planning and Development Office called on Dabawenyos to show their support in combating climate change by participating in this year’s Earth Hour on Saturday, March 22.

Errol John Denosta, Project Evaluation Officer III of the DCPDO, told the City Information Office that a ceremonial switch-off will be held at the City Hall to mark the occasion.

City Hall’s lights will be turned off between 8:30 and 9:30 Saturday night.

He said the ceremonial activity seeks to increase public awareness of environmental sustainability.

“Dili man ni siya pinugsanay but it is highly encouraged to raise awareness about our ongoing fight against climate change. If we talk about climate change, daghan man god siya’g effects sa atoa, especially sa tao, forest, and biodiversity (This initiative is not required, but Dabawenyos are highly encouraged primarily to increase awareness of the ongoing fight against climate change, because if we talk about climate change, it has negative impacts on us, especially on people, forests, and biodiversity),” he said.

He said that the Earth Hour first began in Australia in 2007, as a grassroots movement to raise awareness about climate issues. Since then, the movement has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, which united millions of people across the globe.

He also said that the Earth Hour would serve as a symbolic act that would remind Dabawenyos of the importance of collective effort in addressing climate change. CIO
