The City Government of Davao on Wednesday commemorated the 83rd Araw ng Kagitingan with a solemn ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Monument on C. Bangoy Street.
The ceremony honored the bravery and sacrifices of soldiers who endured the Fall of Bataan and the infamous Death March during the World War II.
Vice Mayor Melchor Quitain Jr. led the event with Police Lt. Gen. Isidro Lapeña (Ret.) as the Guest of Honor. Representatives from the city government and other agencies also participated in the event.
In his address delivered by Vice Mayor Quitain, Mayor Baste emphasized the importance of remembering the heroism of Filipino soldiers who fought for freedom and peace.
He also urged Dabawenyos to emulate the defenders of Bataan by standing strong for the greater good of the nation, while emphasizing unity and resilience in facing contemporary challenges.
Lapeña, a former chief of the Davao City Police Office, in his speech, highlighted the significance of April 9 not just as a day to commemorate the struggles of World War II but to celebrate the enduring valor of Filipino heroes.
He said the legacy of these soldiers lies in their defense of values like freedom, dignity, and love of country.
“True victory is not always measured in territory or triumph but in the courage to resist oppression and in the willingness to fight for a brighter future we believe in,” he remarked.
Lapeña also called on Dabawenyos to preserve and embody the bravery of those who fought in Bataan, reminding them that Kagitingan is a living principle to be practiced daily.
“May it awaken within us the essence of our pagka-Filipino, not just by birth but by action, sacrifice, and love of country,” he said. CIO
