Davao City Councilor Luna Dominique Acosta, in a privileged speech during the 20th Davao City Council on Tuesday, enjoined everyone to remember the spirit of the EDSA People Power Revolution, which is commemorated every February 25.
“On this day in 1986, people from all walks of life gathered together on the streets of EDSA to end the 20-year Marcos dictatorship. The people power revolution was a landmark case for democracy as it marked a uniquely peaceful resolution through years of violence and oppression from the very government that should protect its citizens. Today, we commemorate the struggles and challenges that led to that fateful people power revolution,” Acosta said.
She also reminded everyone to remember those who have worked against the dictatorship for the sake of democracy and the victims.
“While there are certain factions who wish to revise, downplay and even erase the history of the Marcos dictatorship we should also remember that ordinary Filipino people should continue to remember this day as an important piece of our history that we can continue to learn from, with the current issues faced by our government and our people today, one cannot help but wonder if this could happen again,” she added.
Acosta urged everyone to not allow even a silent martial law to occur in our country.
“Let us not let a silent martial law occur in our country. Let us not let the laws be thwarted by the very people who should craft and implement them. In the words of our 1987 Constitution, work that we enshrined as a direct result of the struggles from that of the Marcos dictatorship. Let us always remember that sovereignty resides in the people and all government authority emanates from them,” Acosta said.
She added that nothing is greater than when the Filipino people come together.
“Let us be reminded that when the Filipino people come together, there is nothing we cannot do. When pushed too hard, we will fight back against any attempt to return to oppression, violence or martial law. On this day we remember, on this day we will never forget, never again,” she said. CIO
