The City Government of Davao, along with its employees and offices, participated in the global “Earth Hour” event on Saturday, March 22.

City Hall turned off the lights from 8:30 to 9:30 in the evening, symbolizing the city’s dedication in the fight against climate change and in promoting environmental sustainability.

Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, in his speech delivered by Councilor Temujin “Tek” Ocampo, underscored the importance of taking measures to address climate change, which he described as a global crisis.

“For many years now, Earth Hour has been one of our vital environmental movements done globally to unite people on taking actions of environmental issues,” he said.

He said that the movement is more than a lights-off event, calling it a “powerful symbol of collective support for the planet, and a call to action against climate change.”

Duterte also encouraged Dabawenyos to take steps toward sustainability.

“Your actions, no matter how small, can create a ripple effect that brings out a meaningful change in our call to a sustainable future,” he said.

Last year, Davao City saved 132 megawatts of power, a significant increase on the 63 megawatts of power saved in 2023.

The event serves as a reminder of the importance of collective effort to protect the planet for future generations. CIO
