The city government of Davao called on Dabawenyo motorists to abide by the city’s Traffic Code and to stop drag racing on the city’s public roads.

This, following reports of motorists violating the traffic rules and regulations of the city and the recorded wave of drag racing incidents.

On March 20, one of the perpetrators involved in a viral video of a drag racing activity that took place in Bajada, Davao City surrendered to the Bajada Police Station. The video showed two motorists drag racing on the public road and disregarding the city’s traffic rules, as well as the safety of pedestrians.

In a privilege speech during the 11th regular session on March 22, City Councilor Bonz Andre Militar said that hobbyists might see the act as a harmless activity, but from a bystander’s perspective, it is “a reckless disregard of public safety.” He then urged motorists to take these activities to sanctioned racetracks or streets to avoid endangering the public.

“I urge these speedsters not to use our public roads as avenues for their need for speed. Let us channel this passion into sanctioned racetracks or streets, in a safe and controlled environment for competition,” Militar said.

Militar also commended the “decisive action of the city’s law enforcement agencies in cracking down on these illegal activities.”

He also extended his gratitude to the city mayor’s strict campaign against illegal drag racing in the city.

Meanwhile, Militar passed a resolution during the session urging motorists to stop drag racing on public roads to ensure the safety of both pedestrians and vehicles.

Dabawenyos are also reminded of the collective responsibility of ensuring the safety and security of every citizen in the city.
“Freedom ends where it infringes on the safety of others. This is not a punishment but a call to action. We have a collective responsibility to protect ourselves, our families, and our neighbors,” Militar said. CIO
