This year’s Youth Environment Summit (YES) placed the spotlight on young leaders in disaster risk reduction and management.
Emmanuel Crismas, Operations Head of the Davao City Youth Development Office (DCYDO), on Monday said that a total of 4,358 participants from various parts of the Davao Region participated in the event.
The DCYDO is a division of the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO).
He said the summit was intended to ignite local passion for environmental activism. The event featured discussions on climate adaptation, resiliency, and the vital role of youths in safeguarding communities against disasters.
“Ang atoa man gyod nga gina-look forward is the [youths] in the community who participated the activity will implement [their learning] in their areas particularly katong mga lugar nga agianan gyod og bagyo (We expect that the young people who took part in the activity will apply what they learned there, especially in typhoon-prone areas),” he said.
He said the focus on practical application underscores the summit’s commitment to not just dialogue, but also create tangible disaster preparedness initiatives in the community level.
The event was spearheaded by the Davao City Youth for Green Environment Incorporation in partnership with the CSWDO through DCYDO and, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), among other key agencies.
Crismas said that as the participants return to their respective communities, their engagement is expected to cultivate a generation of environmentally conscious leaders ready to drive change in their communities. CIO
