The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) on Monday confirmed that it has temporarily closed the Matina Crossing overpass and recommended further inspection of the Bunawan Overpass for safety assessment following Saturday’s magnitude 6.9 earthquake.

CDRRMO head Alfredo Baloran said they recommended the temporary closure of the Matina Crossing Overpass to determine if its structure is still sound.

“Ang Crossing Matina overpass gi-recommend namo for closure subject for further assessment sa mga structural engineer sa DPWH kung safe pa ba ang maong overpass. (We recommended the closure of the Crossing Matina Overpass, subject to further assessment by the structural engineers from DPWH to determine if it is still safe),” Baloran said.

He also added that while they did not recommend the closure of the Bunawan Overpass, they asked structural engineers for further inspection as hairline cracks on its foundation were observed after the earthquake.

He added that about 10 schools in the outskirts of Davao City and city centers reported hairline cracks after the quake but were later deemed safe for occupancy.

He said that the assessments after the earthquake are still ongoing, and they expect further reports of cracks, especially from business owners who closed their buildings during the weekend.

“We expect nga naa pay mareport nga naay slight damages sa buildings (We expect that there will be reports of slight damages in the buildings),” he said.

Baloran continued to remind Dabawenyos to stay alert and follow safety protocols, especially during earthquakes. CIO
