Five distinguished awardees were honored for their exceptional achievement in the fields of innovation, creative arts, business, education, and visual arts during the 53rd Datu Bago Awards.

The awarding ceremony was held at the Royal Mandaya Hotel on March 7.

The Datu Bago Award Organization Board of Trustees’ selection committee chose this year’s winners from a pool of 12 nominees. The nominations opened in October last year.

Luis Alfonso Ybañez Aboitiz (posthumous) was recognized for Innovative Leadership in corporate social responsibility and his efforts to update Davao City’s 911 system.

Perla Pichon Kwan was given the award for pioneering academic excellence as founder of the Precious International School of Davao, and for her contributions to educational literature.

Maria Antoinette Tiukinhoy Pamintuan was awarded for Creative Arts. She elevated Davao’s global presence in the design industry and supported local artists.

Protacio Tan Tacandong was the recipient of the Business and Finance Award for upholding ethical business practices and encouraging financial transparency, both of which improved Davao’s economic climate.

Josefina Carriedo-Tionko was the Visual Arts awardee for her support of the city’s artistic community through events like the Davao Artfest and her leadership of the Dabawenyo Artists Federation or DAFI.

A special award was also given to Oscar Ong for his humanitarian efforts in providing free surgical care to indigent patients in Davao City, particularly in the Southern Philippines Medical Center.

Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte praised the awardees for their exceptional contributions to the city’s growth and for emulating the Dabawenyos’ attitude of tenacity, diligence, and compassion.

“You have not only excelled in your respective fields but have also given back to the community in meaningful ways, making you truly deserving of this prestigious recognition,” the mayor said.

“It is our hope that you continue to serve as pillars of progress, sources of inspiration, and leaving proof that greatness is achieved through purpose-driven action. May your dedication ignite the same spirit service in others and inspire every Dabawenyo to be our partners toward the continued progress of our city,” he added.

City Councilor Pilar Braga, chair of the Committee on Education, Science, and Technology, Arts and Culture, also congratulated the awardees stating that Datu Bago Awards have served as a source of motivation, honoring men and women whose commitment and accomplishments have made a lasting impression on Davao City.

“Each of these individuals embodies the values that the Datu Bago Awards stand for— excellence, service, and an unwavering commitment to the growth and progress of Davao City,” she said.

“Your achievements uplift us all and we are forever grateful for your passion, your dedication, and the impact that you have made, as always we say, we rise by lifting others. May your legacy continue to inspire generations to come” she added.
