The City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) has extended immediate assistance to residents affected by a recent fire incident in Purok Medalla in Barangay Buhangin.

The fire affected five houses, two razed to ground, two partially damaged and another one sustaining slight damage. The incident affected 12 families and 35 individuals.

CSWDO Head Julie P. Dayaday told reporters after the weekly Flag Ceremony that when the fire broke out on Friday, their office, together with barangay council representatives and other concerned agencies, were quick to respond.

She said that their office distributed food packs at the Purok Medalla Milagros Gym located in Buhangin Proper, which was used as temporary shelter for the fire victims.

Dayaday said that they finished the validation of the affected families last Saturday.

As of today, preparations are underway for the release of financial assistance. Based on the CSWDO guidelines, homeowners with razed houses will receive Php20,000, partially affected households will receive Php15,000, and sharers or boarders will be given Php5,000 each.

In the light of the fire incident, Dayaday urged Dabawenyos to take extra precautions to prevent similar incidents.

“Mag-igmat kita (We should stay alert). It is our responsibility—our safety and protection is the responsibility of each one of us,” Dayaday said.

She also reminded Dabawenyos to avoid fire hazards such as unattended candles and to properly handle flammable materials.

“Dili lang kini trabaho sa barangay o sa mga responders. Bisan kita, kinahanglan mag-amping. Basta Dabawenyo, disiplina gyud—even when it comes to our own safety (This is not the task of our barangay or our responders alone, even us we should take care, because every Dabawenyo is disciplined—discipline matters when it comes to our own safety),” she said.
