About the Davao City Library and Information Center

History

The Davao City Library and Information Center, established in 1938, is dedicated to promoting literacy and lifelong learning in our diverse community. Initially housed in a private building on Magallanes Street, the library has grown through various transformations and relocations, continually adapting to better serve the public.

In 1951, the library was revived by local women’s organizations, leading to a period of reorganization and growth. The library’s collection expanded significantly in 1957 with a substantial donation from the United States Information Services Library. By 1965, the City Council recognized the library as a separate office of the City Government of Davao, which enabled the construction of a new building near City Hall, surrounded by Rizal and Osmeña Parks.

In 1997, the library moved to a more client-friendly facility in the Sangguniang Panlungsod Building. In 2022, it was relocated to a modern, 5-storey building on C. Bangoy Street, Poblacion District. This new facility features different sections on each floor, designed to cater to the diverse needs of our patrons and provide a more functional and welcoming environment.

Today, the Davao City Library and Information Center remains committed to supporting the literacy programs of the City Government and the National Library of the Philippines. We offer a wide range of innovative programs and services designed to meet the needs of 21st-century clients.
