The 20th Davao City Council on Tuesday approved the third and final reading an ordinance granting authority to the Davao City Mayor to sign a Memorandum of Agreement with identified fast food chains in the city, in relation to work opportunities for senior citizens and differently-abled persons.

The resolution aims to open more opportunities for senior citizens, recognizing that many of them remain strong and healthy. Even retirees are not necessarily frail or incapable but are still able to contribute significantly to society.

“There is a need to provide more policies and programs for our senior citizens, including the establishment of a city policy that promotes work opportunities for senior citizens and differently-abled persons through legislative action and by encouraging the private sector to establish employment programs for them,” the resolution enacting the ordinance reads.

According to the committee report, the committee conducted a series of discussions to explore work opportunities for senior citizens.

Recognizing the valuable experience and capabilities of older individuals, the committee also engaged with key government agencies and private sector stakeholders to assess the feasibility of integrating senior citizens into the workforce.

Representatives from the Davao City Public Employment Services Office, Department of Labor and Employment, and Davao City Legal Office shared insights during the crafting of the ordinance.

The main proponent of the ordinance is Councilor Diosdado Angelo Junior R. Mahipus, with co-proponents Councilor Bai Hundra Cassandra Dominique N. Advincula and Councilor Temujin B. Ocampo. CIO
