The City Planning and Development Office (CPDO) said the city’s green initiatives will be assessed in the One Planet Cities Challenge during its 2025-2026 run.
CPDO Statistician II Edwin Bacalso told Davao City Disaster Radio on Wednesday he was hopeful that the city will be able to make it in the list of finalists, as it will showcase the collective efforsts in the implementaiton of climate change interventions.
“Isa sa mga basehan nga makalampos ang greenhouse gas inventory, naa’y sectors, gina-measure and ginareport. Gina-upload nato ang initiatives–tangible pati ang policies. Sa kani nga mga lakang ubay-ubay na siya nga collective efforts sa tibuok City Government of Davao (One of the basis of this is the green house gas inventory, sectors will be evaluated, and the indicators will be measures and reported. We will upload the initiatives, the tangible ones and the policies. The city has various programs, with the collective effort of the whole City Govermment of Davao),” he said.
He said that the city will highlight its ban on single-use plastics, the implementation of waste segregation, conversion of sodium lights to LED lights, infrastructure policies in underground cabling and coastal roads.
“Ipasigarbo nato nga ang City Government naay lakang para protektahan ang environment, dili lang protektahan, apil pud tong conservation, gina-luto nga mga polisiya nga protektahan ang watersheds. Ang pagbutang og Urban Ecological Enhancement Sub-Zone isa na sa lakang nga ginabuhat para protectahan ang environment (We will show that the City Government o Davao has taken steps to protect the environment more than just protection, we will also highlight conversion, and the policies being crafted to protect the watersheds. We will also highlight the Urban Ecological Enhancement Sub-zone, which is among the ways the city put in place to protect the watersheds),” Bacalso said.
Cedrick Dela Cuesta, CPDO Operations Assistant, said that in line with the challenge, they coordinated with other offices, which are part of the Davao City Climate Change Committee, to gather data.
He said that Davao City will submit its data and will be reviewed. The city will be given results.
“Makatabang ni sa atoang mga action plans kay nagahatag sila og suggestion kung unsa ang atong gina-input. Naa ta’y opportunity nga ang mga good practices sa uban cities ma-adapt pud nato (The results will help our action plans because they will provide suggestions based on our input. We will also be given the opportunity to adapt the good practices of other cities) ” Dela Cuesta said.
Dela Cuesta highlighted that the OPCC is a friendly competition without the promise of monetary reward, as in this competition rewards and puts to pedestal cities’ with commendable environment initiatives.
Both Bacalso and Dela Cuesta encouraged Dabawenyos to do their bidding, implement solid waste management and follow the city’s programs to protect the environment as all of this will help the city’s integral and collective climate change initiatives. CIO
