Around 2,000 individuals are expected to join the Autism Walk scheduled on April 13 at a local mall here.

Representatives from the Philippine Autism Society-Davao, during the Kapehan sa Davao on Monday, bared that the annual Angel’s Walk aims to raise awareness about autism.

Uswaldo Parreñas, President of the World Autism Society Davao, said that they hold the annual activity as part of the World Autism Month.

“We are inviting the LGUs, civic organizations. We are expecting almost 2,000 participants who will attend the Angel’s Walk for autism.,” Parreñas said, adding that parents and advocates from the Autism Society of the Philippines will also join to promote the welfare of people on the autism spectrum.

He said that the many of the participants will be from Davao City but participants from nearby towns are also invited.

Parreñas emphasized that the activity will serve as an avenue to campaign for awareness about autism.

“We would like to focus on acceptance. We want everyone to accept the individuals who have this condition of autism,” he said.

He said that the activity will start at 1 pm on Sunday. The registration will open by 12 noon. Children with autism will also showcase their talents during the event.

Parreñas also said that they invited a marching band and mascots to bring life to the Angel’s Walk.

Noting that as incidence of children born with autism spectrum rose in Davao City, the organization continues to advocate for right of intervention and early state support for children, as well as forming family support groups to teach parents and siblings of children in spectrum on what to do.

He also extended gratitude to the City Government of Davao for opening last month the Davao City Special Needs Intervention Center for Children that helps in the early intervention for children, which also covers children with autism.CIO
