Davao City Fire District will visit 26 barangays in Davao City this year as part of their ‘Oplan Ligtas sa Pamayanan’ program— an initiative to bolster their fire safety efforts.

Fire Senior Inspector Frances Marie Sendrijas, chief of the public information unit of the Davao City Fire District, said that as of January, they have visited seven of the 26 target barangays.
Already visited were Barangays Tigatto, Buhangin, Lasang, Mahayag, Lanang, Lapu-Lapu, and Ilang.

Still to be visited are Barangays 19-B Fatima Village and 19-B Awhag Village, Barangays 1-A and 10-A, Toril proper, Panacan, Talomo proper, Matina Pangi, Indangan, Riverside, Calinan, Mintal, and Tugbok, among others.

Sendrijas said they have also conducted 50 fire drills from January to February this year.

She said the initiative was launched in 2018 when they visited barangays and educate residents on essential preventive measures with the goals of raising community awareness, reducing fire risks, and encouraging a preparedness and safety culture.’

The Davao City Fire District also conducts house-to-house inspections to identify potential fire hazards.

Sendrijas also urged Dabawenyos to participate in the Fire Square Roadshow on March 15 and 16 at the SM City Davao Annex Activity Area and on March 29 and 30 at the Ayala Malls Abreeza Activity Area as part of the Fire Prevention Month celebration.

She said that the purpose of the Fire Square Roadshow is to teach the public, especially the younger generation, essential life-saving and fire safety skills.

“We really encourage the community to have drills conducted or fire safety lectures kasi napakalaking tulong nito kasi hindi lang to sa sarili natin, sa mga bahay natin, (because this is a big help, not just for ourselves, for our homes) but it really helps the community. This fire prevention is not just the work of the firefighters it’s the whole community. We need to help each other to achieve this fire-safe nation,” Sendrijas said in an interview with the city-owned Davao City Disaster Radio.

She also called on Dabawenyos to join them in their activities in celebration of the Fire Prevention Month. CIO
