The Davao City Health Office’s (CHO) Nutrition Division, in coordination with the National Nutrition Council XI (NNC), on Wednesday aired the first episode of its Nutrition School-on-the-Air (NSOA) program over city-owned Davao City Disaster Radio (DCDR).

The NSOA is a program that offers free lectures on the importance of proper nutrition, and the how-tos in maintaining a healthy body.

“I-discuss nato ang mga mahitungod sa nutrisyon, ang ka-importansya sa nutrisyon bahin sa 10 Kumainments (We will talk about nutrition, and the importance of proper nutrition in relation to the 10 Kumainments),” Retsebeth Laguihon, Officer-in-Charge of the NNC, said.

The 10 Kumainments or the more popular version of the revised Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos consist of shorter messages on nutrition that are easier to understand and remember.

The Kumainments were developed to help improve the nutritional status of Filipinos so that they can live healthier and more productive lives.

Improvement of eating habits and behaviors of the people to prevent malnutrition and diet-related non-communicable diseases like cancer and diabetes is also one of the core objectives of the Kumainments.

The Kumainments also include eating a variety of foods to ensure the body obtains necessary nutrients; the importance of breastfeeding especially during the first six months of the child; eating fruits and vegetables; and consuming protein-rich foods.

Through the NSOA, these messages will be thoroughly discussed by nutrition specialists from the CHO and NNC.

“Atoa nang isa-isahon og tackle ang atoang key messages pinaagi niining Nutrition School-on-the-Air. Naa kita’y mga module nga i-follow (We will discuss each key message through the NSOA. We’ll also follow a module for the discussions),” Laguihon said.

The NSOA will be aired at 11 a.m. every Wednesday through the DCDR Health Alert program.

Dabawenyos are encouraged to tune-in to the program to gain insights on proper nutrition and healthy lifestyle. CIO
