Mayor Inday Sara Duterte is bringing the city government’s education campaign on proper waste disposal to all schools in Davao City as she makes a stronger stance on protecting the environment.

Mayor Sara emphasized the need to educate pupils on the importance of proper waste disposal and its effects on the environment after meeting Japan’s Kitakyushu Mayor Kenji Kitahashi, who stressed on the proper disposal of wastes and shifting to environment-friendly appliances.

“In Japan, the problem of garbage is a big concern. The solution is the understanding of the citizens. We spend lots of effort in providing knowledge to address this concern,” he said.

Sara acknowledged that the understanding of city residents on the importance of proper waste disposal was lacking.

Sara, however, she said the city government continues to implement initiatives in making Davao City a “green city”, even trying to copy the waste to energy (WTE) facility of Kitakyushu. Kitakyushu is Japan’s northernmost city on Kyushu Island.

Sara also stressed on the city government’s programs to have a healthy environment by exploring ways to achieve a greener environment like Kitakyushu, Davao City’s sister city.

She mentioned the every Saturday coastal clean up in the 36 coastal barangays to prevent waste ending up in the sea and the changing of the existing streetlights to led.

“There are efforts laid down to have a green city like how Kitakyushu converted its city. We are grateful to Kitakyushu for helping us in our endeavors and being with us in our aim to have a green city,” she said.

Kitahashi said his government would also like to train personnel of the Davao City government on how to have successful solid waste management.

“Kitakyushu has seen that we are capable of providing help in the area of training personnel (for you) to have a green city,” he said. CIO
